said it briefly last night, but i'm so impressed with how we can now control games away from home where previously we would struggle.

southampton
newcastle
fulham
leicester
brighton (even though we lost)

hats off to MP and the players.

Russ we can question Anderson, Pellegrini does andI 100% agreewith him

On match-winner Felipe Anderson: "Of course he is a different player, a player that in every game makes important plays - he will continue improving.

"He still loses too many balls, maybe because he must understand the Premier League is difficult if you keep the ball in your feet."

>>> Anyone saying he's lazy or doesn't track back know nothing about football.

Well I don't think he's lazy at all. But it's surely completely obvious that he doesn't consistently track back - I could show you dozens of clips that prove that. But if you're building a side around him then perhaps you don't want him to track back.

I think he should be playing centrally against tougher opponents. Maybe as a striker. We'd maybe get more of his strengths and his weakness tracking back wouldn't be such an issue.

Rice is a huge talent - I said earlier this season that he plays like the Forest version of Roy Keane, without the cards, and possibly with a crisper pass.

Here in Spain, the Barcelona looks for a substitute for Busquets and you have it-we have here: Rice ...... yesterday was extraordinary .... on the final play of the match accompanied Anderson ...... he is tireless

Anderson's work rate and desire is impressive too. Anyone saying he's lazy or doesn't track back know nothing about football.

Love the way Pellegrini is telling the players that we are a big club (we are) and is demanding we try to win every game, the ambition and mentality at the club needed to change before we can move on to the next level where a club with our fanbase should be!

Alex G we don't know if a decent left peg for going forward and crossing otherwise he would be cutting back in on his right foot

I hope the 'knicker wetters' after the Watford game have washed them and put them back in the drawer for a while!

Absolutely fantastic result, considering we are down to the bare bones!!

I missed the game - I was far too knackered after this week to keep my eyes open after 11pm Middle East time, so took myself off to zedland (with, I must admit, much trepidation after seeing the line-up).

A pleasant start to my last weekend of 2018, I must say. I need to find the game and time to watch it now.

I think we're finally getting the depth of squat the league demands, which, hopefully, indicates that the board are coming around to a 21st century approach to running a football club.

Oi! Close that fucking window - there's an unpleasant draught wafting in.

Re: Southampton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-2
And so is Zabaleta.... I figured playing both at them at right back and having no left back would be slightly unbalanced so I switched Fredricks to left back. Not the first time in history a player has been asked to fill in on the other full back position to which they normally play.

Fredrick's is a right back

An excellent performance. We can say with some degree of certainty that Antonio is now back to his best. It's also looking like Cresswell might be getting there as well, which is very encouraging. I think we need to finish at least 7th to stand a chance of keeping all our best players, but that's do-able. Imagine what a force we can be at anything like full strength and with some sensible strengthening in the summer. Massive credit to Pellegrini and to the board for appointing him.

Re: Southampton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-2
Ignoring the fact we don't have a goalie out injured, who do you think would win in a game between who lined up for us last night and a currently out injured side....

Zabaleta - Balbuena - Reid - Fredericks
Sanchez
Yamalenko Wilshere
Lanzini
Hernandez - Arnautovic

Not a bad side that!

Re: Southampton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-2
For me, the factor yesterday was psychology and fitness (gettit?!?!!?). The whole team really showed up and matched the skills of key personnel like Fabiański, Diop, Rice and Anderson with a hungry confident swagger both on and off the ball. You could just see the Saints diminish as their every attack was smothered and each contested ball was lost, while we just grew and expanded. I believe Antonio even did a few step-overs in their area at one point, which isn’t bad for someone who only pretends to be playing football ;)

He has a very useful knack of pinging balls into the corner of the net from 20 yds.
Nice skill to have.

Re: Southampton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-2
Also have to say that anyone still questioning Anderson and what he does on the pitch needs there heads testing.

As others have said; that's what £40m gets you, a result at Soton when your squad is injury ravaged and you go a goal down.

7 goals in 9 games he's now got. Bloke is pure class.

Re: Southampton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-2
I tell you what, that result last night was phenomenal. In the grand scheme of things and the PL as a whole it will be a mere note of the score for everyone else but for West Ham United as a club that result could well be hugely significant.

Because what it does is reenergise us and get our tails up for the January games.

My concern was that after Watford we would be flat. A bad result, not a great performance, more injuries picked up. And a team that, to me, looked a bit jaded and out of steam. A performance that really looked like we needed the injured players back.

And so to me it looked like the January fixtures may not be as good as the December ones.

But after last night we can now go into Jan with added vigour and confidence. And if we have a January like we have had December then there is no reason why we can't genuinely start looking at European places.

A massive result last night. Absolutely massive. It's now down to the players to take that result into the next game as they know that they can get results even with so many players out injured.

Some injured players back would be nice tho having said that.

Re: Southampton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-2
I thought at times, that Anderson looked lazy and disinterested without the ball.

He was trotting aimlessly around, not really marking anyone or closing anyone down.

Wayward passing, giving the ball away a few times.

Then someone flicks the switch and he's off.

And he wins the game with two superb finishes.

That's what 40 million buys you instead of our usual purchases who are often all of the above without the latter part.

What a good side Pellegrini is building here. Decimated with injury, only 6 subs available (and to be fair, I'd never even heard of Coventry), the club captain on the bench, and we could easily have won that by 3 or 4 goals.

Re: Southampton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-2
Cresswell played like that for two games running now. Both games he's played in. Think with a good player in front of him he's mint as he's able to predict more accurately what that player will do and how he should position himself.
